With mobile users becoming increasingly cautious in protecting their personal data they carry around each day, there is a misconception that mobiles do not support cookies. This is partly true. Most mobiles actually support first party cookies, however it’s third party cookies (used in advertising) where things differ.
Reasons for this can be seen listed below:
- Mobiles come in many different variants, all with different operating systems and browsers. Much unlike desktop, which provide a uniform environment for users to be tracked by cookies.
- Browsers on desktop are able to store cookies within the software/hard drive. This process is more difficult on mobile due to browsers being an application.
- The ‘opt-out’ option is enabled by default on most mobile browsers. Until recently iOS had this enabled by default.
- Applications on iOS do not store cookies by default.
